Wall lights are usually installed to provide ambient lighting when indoors. Outdoors, they are used to increase safety and visibility. So there are no real rules to follow for its height.
The ideal height for installing outdoor wall lights
There are different types of outdoor wall lights and often their height varies depending on their function.
Wall light
Many people think that the ideal outdoor lighting height for a home is always a little higher than head height . In most entryway areas, your exterior wall lights should be positioned so that the focal point is approximately 66 to 72 inches above the ground . That is, typically, wall lights are mounted three-quarters of the way up the door.
Landscape lighting
If you put lights in your garden, it is just to illuminate the paths and provide an ideal layout. When using low lights, the suggested height is 30 to 60 cm from the ground . But if you want taller lights for good lighting, opt for light columns.
So, the ideal height for overhead lighting is therefore 150 cm from the ground . For more aesthetics, recessed lights are perfect for lighting your garden paths.
Ceiling lights
Many homes now have balconies or small outdoor patios. For these areas, use outdoor ceiling lights . And for added security at night, choosing to install a floodlight will be the perfect solution. These lights should be mounted under the ridge of the roof with a motion detector.
The standard installation height for porch lights
Porch lighting, hung at the right height, can deter burglars . It can also highlight the architecture of your home or illuminate your path as you enter and exit.

Wall light
A wall sconce near the front door should be about one-third the height of the door . For a 108-inch door, hang the light about 72 inches from the floor. If you're hanging lights on both sides of the door, hang them about one-quarter the height of the door.
Ceiling light
An attractive porch lighting plan will also include ceiling lights in the form of recessed can lights . These lights should be hung at regular intervals avoiding glare and hot spots for an evenly lit porch area.

Safety lights
Motion-sensing security lights should be mounted inside the corner of the dashboard. Garage door lights illuminate the path into the garage:
- Depending on the garage door, a lantern in the middle or on each side of the garage door should be installed .
- Use the same rule as for exterior lights near doors: Hang the lights on the sides of the garage doors about a quarter of the way down from the top .
- Rear door lighting is also recommended for security. To do this, use the same approach as front door lighting.
