These different types of location and " concentration " of light are primarily related to how focused or localized the light is - is it spread (diffuse) across the room, reflecting off surfaces, or is there more direct, focused light near a person performing an activity.

The different types of lighting fixtures and lamps attempt to solve a problem: " How do I position light in the correct horizontal and vertical position in a room to serve a purpose ?"
The biases of different forms of light.
The physical design of the luminaire or lamp itself involves one of three possibilities:
- Ceiling lights, for example suspended from a chain using gravity, or fixed close to the ceiling itself.
- Floor lamps , which attempt to overcome gravity, for example with a standing lamp or a side lamp .
- Table lamps , which place light in the middle of the room by placing the light source above a built-in piece of furniture, such as a table lamp , desk lamp, or low pendant lamp .
