How to recognize an LED bulb?
Most residential LED bulbs have the typical bulb shape, but they are usually made with a plastic shell instead of glass, and only part of the body is translucent. The bulb should also be marked "LED" or "LED LAMP."
Dimming type of led bulb
Most residential LED bulbs are dimmable, but some are not. Additionally, the intensity of the dimming, or "dimming range," also varies depending on the bulb used.
For the best experience, use a dimmable LED with the widest dimming range. While non-dimmable LED bulbs are supported, they are not recommended for the best lighting experience.
There are 4 types of dimmable LEDs:
- LED (narrow range).
- LED (moderate range).
- LED (typical range).
- LED (extended range).
How to recognize an incandescent light bulb?
Incandescent bulbs were the most common type of residential light bulb until recently, when more energy-efficient bulbs like CFLs or LEDs gained popularity.
They are usually made of a translucent or transparent glass envelope, which allows the internal filament to be seen.
Incandescent bulb dimming type
Incandescent bulbs have a very wide dimming range. This allows for a wide variety of layered lighting effects, from very bright scenes to a pleasant glow when dimmed.
How to recognize a halogen bulb?
Halogen bulbs look very similar to incandescent bulbs, with a similar shape and glass envelope. Look for the "HALOGEN" marking on the bulb or packaging.
Halogen bulb dimming type
Halogen bulbs are very similar to incandescent bulbs, but they are slightly more energy efficient . Like incandescent bulbs, halogen bulbs have the widest dimming range and produce a beautiful glow when dimmed.
How to recognize a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL)?
CFLs fit in the same space as a standard residential bulb, but typically have a spiral or U-shaped glass tube that is illuminated.
Type of dimming of a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL)
Most CFLs are not dimmable , but those that are typically have a narrower dimming range than LED or incandescent bulbs.
There are 2 types of dimmable CFL bulbs:
- LFC (narrow range)
- LFC (typical range)
How to recognize a fluorescent bulb?
Fluorescent light bulbs are long tubes that are sometimes found in homes, in spaces such as garages or basements.
Fluorescent bulb dimming type
They cannot be dimmed and must therefore be set as "non-dimmable" dimming type.
How to recognize ELV and MLV low voltage luminaires?
ELV and MLV low voltage fixtures are typically identified by bi-pin MR-16 bulbs. However, it is difficult to determine whether the fixture is an ELV or MLV type.
To determine if you have an ELV or MLV fixture, look at the transformer (sometimes installed in the fixture , in the ceiling, or elsewhere) or the instructions that came with the fixture.
You may not be able to determine if the fixture is an ELV or MLV type simply by looking at the bulbs installed.
Dimming type of low voltage luminaire ELV and MLV
ELV and MLV luminaires are generally dimmable.
