The lighting guide
There are many factors that go into creating the perfect lighting setup in your home, which is why the team at Lustria creates easy-to-follow guides.
Whether it's light colors, bulb types or how lighting fixtures influence your design style, we've got you covered.
Lighting Basics to Guide You
Types of lighting for your home
All the lighting in your home falls into one of the following categories:
- General lighting .
- Direct lighting.
- Accent lighting.
General lighting refers to the main light in the room.
Also known as ambient lighting , this type of lighting includes both light fixtures and natural light from skylights or windows.
Accent lighting illuminates a specific area of the room.
Think of a reading chair, a kitchen island, a dining room table, or a beautiful piece of art that you want to highlight. Accent lighting targets these areas and provides enough light to cover that element without overwhelming it.
Task lighting uses fixtures and lamps to illuminate a work area.
Think of a desk lamp for paperwork, a vanity lamp for makeup, or an over-the-sink lamp for dishes. Sometimes a lamp can fall into more than one category.
Kitchen island lights can be both accent lights and task lights, while track lights can be general or task lighting. Add dimension and depth to a room by layering multiple types of lighting.

What light temperature is best for your home?
The temperature of light bulbs is measured in Kelvin (K) and most homes have light bulbs with temperatures between 2000K and 6500K.
While the scale ranges from 1000K to 10,000K, neutral tones are around 4000K to 4100K.
Temperatures below 4000K have a warmer glow and temperatures above 4100K have a cooler glow.
Warm tones
- 2000K warm candlelight (Very warm tones, similar to the golden glow of candlelight).
- Soft, warm light of 2700K (A soft, comfortable warmth, but not as strong as candlelight). This is a popular choice because of its warmth and flattering color.
Cool/Neutral White
- Bright white 3500K (Tinted with yellow for a brighter aesthetic).
- 4 100K Neutral White (A pure white closer to neutral, without blue or yellow).
Daylight
- 4,500K Daylight (This is a bright tone that leans towards cool, mimicking the look and brightness of daylight).
- 6,500K Extra Bright Daylight (Brighter than 4,500K, this temperature is dazzling with blue tints).
While color temperature preferences are personal, we have some recommendations to get you started.
Soft, warm lights are well suited for bedrooms, living rooms and family rooms – anywhere you want to create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.
We recommend clear or neutral white bulbs for areas where you need bright, clear light, such as the kitchen, bathroom or toilet, where it is important to see details.
Daylight bulbs are typically reserved for areas or work spaces where additional bright light is useful, such as garages, basements, or vanities.
Lumens and Watts
Lumens measure brightness levels and are especially important for LED bulbs. The higher the lumens, the brighter the bulb.
Watts refer to the amount of power a light bulb uses, which is important for fluorescent, incandescent, and halogen bulbs. The higher the wattage, the more energy the bulb uses.
Types of Light Bulbs: Which is Best?
Different types of light bulbs have different lifespans and uses, each with their own pros and cons. Find out if incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, or LED bulbs are right for your home.
Incandescent
This type of bulb is a popular choice because of its nice warmth and low cost. The main disadvantage of incandescent bulbs is their inefficiency.
Much of the wattage is converted into heat rather than light, and the average life of an incandescent bulb is 1,000 hours , which is shorter than most other types of bulbs.
- Lifespan: 1,000 hours.
- Light temperature: 2700K to 3000K.
- Possibility of dimming? Yes
Halogen
A different type of incandescent with a similar lifespan. Halogen bulbs emit a bright white color, closer to daylight than standard incandescent bulbs.
It is best to handle halogen bulbs with gloves rather than bare hands, as oils from your skin can damage the glass, especially when the bulb is hot.
- Lifespan: 1,000 hours.
- Light temperature: 3000K to 3300K.
- Possibility of dimming? Yes
Fluorescent bulbs and compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL)
CFLs are 75% more energy efficient than a standard incandescent bulb and last much longer. Fluorescent lamps are also available in a range of color temperatures from 2,700K to 6,500K.
However, fluorescent filaments contain traces of mercury, so they should be kept intact and used bulbs recycled.
- Lifespan: 8,000+ hours.
- Light temperature: 2700K to 6500K.
- Possibility of gradation? Generally no
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs)
LEDs are by far the most energy-efficient and durable type of light bulb. Most LEDs have a lifespan of at least 25,000 to 50,000 hours . Although they are more expensive, they make up for their cost due to their efficiency.
Some models even change color using remote controls or apps. You can find more information about smart bulbs in the next section.
- Lifespan: 25,000+ hours.
- Light temperature: 2000K to 6500K.
- Possibility of gradation? Yes, but with requirements
Smart bulbs
All smart bulbs are LED, but not all LED bulbs are smart bulbs. Install smart bulbs into your existing sockets to take energy efficiency to the next level.
Use a remote or smartphone app to control dimming, change bulb color, or set a schedule for your lights to save energy. Forgot to turn off the kitchen light before bed?
No problem, turn off the lights from your phone. Smart bulbs have a higher initial cost, but the investment pays off in terms of convenience and lifespan.
- Lifespan: Variable.
- Light temperature: All.
- Possibility of dimming? Yes
Classification of light environments (dry, humid and wet)
Light bulbs and fixtures have safety ratings that indicate the type of environment they are best suited for, based on your home's layout and climate.
Dry classification
Dry lamps can only be used indoors. Place these lamps in rooms without condensation or water, such as hallways, dining rooms, kitchens, living rooms and closets.
Wet Class
This type of bulb has additional seals and materials to keep moisture away from electrical circuits, wiring, and filaments.
It is designed for areas where there is steam, humidity or extreme temperatures. Ideal for bathtubs, vanities, porches, cold rooms and covered patios.
Wet Class
Like humidity-rated bulbs, humidity-rated bulbs go one step further in sealing and water protection.
This type of bulb is ideal for showers or outdoor fixtures for landscape lighting, patio lighting, wall sconces or any other lighting that is exposed directly to water, rain or snow.
Lighting ceilings, walls and more
From large chandeliers to small lamps, we offer a wide variety of lighting options for your home. Combine different fixtures to create a brilliant design.
What are your options for ceiling lights?
Chandeliers
A style statement piece for hundreds of years, chandeliers are more popular than ever. In addition to the timeless crystal chandelier, styles have evolved to include modern , farmhouse, rustic, wood, beaded, rectangular, and even fan chandeliers (charmingly called chandeliers).
Chandeliers are most common in entryways, dining rooms , and living rooms, but with so many options, you can easily add a statement to any room.
Add one in the entryway to welcome your guests, add one in the bedroom for a touch of sophistication, and even one above the bathtub for a luxurious feel.
The best part about chandeliers? They can be as elaborate or as simple as you want them to be, with styles ranging from small and subtle to large and detailed.
Suspensions
Pendant lights hang from the ceiling like a pendant necklace around the neck. The light is the main focal point, attached to a wire or rod to illuminate a specific area or room.
Typically, a pendant light has only one light, but there are models with multiple lights, such as the FIRE model. Pendant lights are flexible in their use and placement, install just one or add multiple lights in a room.
Use them in kitchens , porches, dining rooms, bathrooms, foyers, and bedrooms. When adding multiple pendant lights, such as over a kitchen island, the general rule is to space each light fixture 24 to 32 inches apart.
Much like chandeliers, pendant lights come in a variety of styles and sizes, from farmhouse lanterns to modern glass fixtures.
Spots
Recessed lights are named for the way they hug the ceiling, making them ideal for low ceilings.
This style also includes semi-flush mounts, which can hang a few inches from the ceiling, but not as low as a pendant or chandelier.
This is one of the most flexible types of lighting fixtures, ideal for entryways, porches, closets, basements, and bathrooms. Designs range from subtle and elegant to ornate and eye-catching.
Recessed lights
Recessed lights are popular for low and vaulted ceilings because they provide an even amount of light. Use a single light or group several lights three to six feet apart to provide full, even lighting throughout the room.
They work especially well when paired with pendant lights or chandeliers, adding an extra layer of illumination without interfering with the style. The simple design of recessed lights makes them a popular choice for kitchens, living rooms and bathrooms.
Track lighting
Track lighting is a flexible lighting style with multiple light heads, or pendants, on a track to highlight specific elements in a room. They can serve as general lighting, task lighting, or accent lighting, depending on how many heads you use.
Tracks are available in straight or curved styles, with a selection of accessories available for bends, curves or joining multiple tracks. If you're looking for a way to customize the lighting in your home, this style is a great choice.
Since the light heads are flexible, you can reposition and rearrange them to customize your room. The most common uses for track lighting are to highlight artwork, photos, or workspaces.
Lights with fans
Solve two problems with one device by purchasing a ceiling light with fan . Fans help reduce energy costs by circulating air throughout the room, while providing light when needed.
This is a great choice for bedrooms, family rooms, and patios. The larger the fan, the more air it circulates to keep the room cool. These styles also range from classic to modern, with multiple colors to fit your home's aesthetic.
What about sconces and chandeliers?
Bedside lamps for bathroom
Vanity lights are installed above the bathroom mirror or vanity. There are two different types of vanity lights: bar lights that are installed above the mirror and wall lights that are installed on either side of the mirror.
Choose lighting bars above the mirror that are shorter or as wide as the vanity and installed approximately 190 cm on the wall above the floor to provide the best lighting to your face.
Install wall lights at eye level if possible, between 150 and 180 cm from the floor. They facilitate morning and evening routines such as shaving, hair styling, brushing teeth, flossing, applying or removing makeup, or any other task where full and even lighting is important.
Wall lights
Sconces are a great way to accent other lights in a room. They work well on bathroom vanities, but they have other applications as well.
Sconces work well in reading nooks , bedside tables, hallways, living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens. They look great alone or paired with artwork, photographs, mirrors, fireplaces or chandeliers.
They have the uncanny ability to be both traditional and contemporary , making them design chameleons and a popular choice for your home.
LED mirrors
LED mirrors integrate the energy efficiency of LEDs directly into the mirror itself. This provides lighting all around the mirror, allowing you to enjoy constant, even light along the entire length of the mirror.
They add a high-end look to your room and offer a larger reflective surface than smaller LED beauty mirrors. LEDs have a lifespan of tens of thousands of hours, making them a solid option for your vanity.
Lamps and lampshades
While the light fixtures you install are meant to last, lamps and shades are easier to replace as your style and needs evolve.
Add a table lamp to complete an office, reading nook or bedroom. Considering a new rug or color palette?
Simply change the shade and keep your favorite lamp base. Lamps come in all shapes, sizes, finishes and styles, from floor lamps to desk and table lamps.
Combine furniture and lamps to create an eye-catching and functional decor. The options are endless.
Lighting by room
Each room has a different function, and the lighting you choose affects the type of environment you want to create.
Your kitchen has a different aesthetic than your bedroom, which is different than your bathroom. Find out what works best for each room below.
What to Consider for Your Kitchen Lighting
Kitchens are typically brighter than any other room. It is the epicenter of conversations, cooking, food preparation, eating, cleaning, and storing food and utensils.
Because it serves so many purposes, there are a range of lighting options for the kitchen . A good guideline to follow is to make the space as open and bright as possible, as shadows have a darkening effect on the entire room.
To achieve a clean, crisp look, layer different types of lighting. For general lighting, which is the main light besides windows, install recessed lights , flush mounts, or larger fixtures.
Next, for accent and task lighting, include island lights and lights above the dining table to highlight these elements.
Place lights under wall cabinets to chase away shadows and create a brighter counter space. Layering lights creates a more welcoming atmosphere.
Bright lighting for your dressing table and bathroom
The most important thing when installing bathroom lights is to use fixtures that are designed for damp or wet areas. Check product descriptions when shopping to find the safety ratings listed.
Aside from that, bathroom lighting fixtures are flexible when it comes to style and type. Recessed lights over showers and bathtubs are common and reliable choices for providing even lighting.
To add a stylish touch, opt for pendant lights or chandeliers to hang above freestanding or drop-in bathtubs.
Pair other types of over-the-bath lighting with LED sconces, bedside lamps or mirrors to complete the look of your bathroom.
Vanity lights are perfect if you have a narrow vanity or small bathroom, while sconces work best in pairs to provide even lighting.
Beautiful bedroom lighting
While kitchens and bathrooms need bright, even lighting , bedrooms are all about comfort and privacy. Bedroom lighting can be simple and warm or brilliantly decorative, with every detail contributing to a sense of satisfaction.
For simplicity, add a ceiling light as the main fixture with a pair of bedside sconces or table lamps. For an ornate look, add floor lamps, recessed lights or track lighting to brighten the room and add focal points.
Beautiful living room lights
The living room is a great place to layer general, accent and task lighting. While the kitchen provides practical lighting for cooking and entertaining, living room lighting highlights your personality.
For a classic look, pair a lighted ceiling fan or flush mount fixture with a few lamps. Add a large chandelier to make a statement, be more subtle with recessed lights, or pair both for a dazzling atmosphere.
Highlight artwork, photographs or your favourite chair with accent lighting, or create the perfect nook with accent lamps. While the bedroom is your retreat from the world, the living room showcases your style and your home for all to see.
Exceptional lighting in the entrance and hallway
Entryways are the first impression of the interior of your home, while hallways lead to other rooms. In these areas, the eyes are looking for something to catch their attention.
A chandelier or pendant light in an entryway makes a welcoming statement. For lower ceilings, opt for recessed, semi-flush, or flush-mount lighting.
To create an art gallery effect, add sconces or track lighting to highlight photographs, posters, drapes or interesting decor.
Exceptional outdoor lighting fixtures
As with bathroom lights , only install outdoor lights that are rated for wet environments. Indoor fixtures cannot withstand elements like wind, dirt, water, ice, and snow.
The number of outdoor lighting fixtures you need depends on the size of your home, garage, deck and yard. Wall lights, such as sconces and sconces , work well around garages or entryways and are mounted just above eye level to illuminate visitors without blinding them.
Outdoor ceiling lights work well on porches and patios, while post lights can be installed anywhere in the yard (as long as you keep a 12-inch distance from curbs and driveways).
Pathway lights highlight landscaping and walkways, and patio lighting illuminates parties and gatherings.
