Feeling overwhelmed by the process? Want to add pendant lighting to your modern space, but don’t know where to start? This pendant lighting lesson is for you!

Why choose a pendant light?
Suspended from the ceiling using a chain, wire or pole, pendant lights are perfect for providing task lighting and should not be overlooked when arranging lighting in the home .
With vast style options, an abundance of colors, shades, designs and materials, pendant lights are both functional and stylish and can be placed anywhere in the home.

How to choose the perfect suspension?
Finding the perfect pendant light for your modern space can seem overwhelming. To help you choose a pendant light , here are a few things to consider:
1. The size of the room.
The size of the pendant light varies depending on the size of the room. A large room will benefit from pendant lights with large, prominent shades , while smaller ones may get lost in the vastness of the room.
Pendant lights with small shades or thin pendants will shine in small rooms, while large pendant lights can appear overbearing and dominate a small space.

2. Scale relative to the target surface.
If you're lighting a kitchen island, chances are you'll need more than one pendant light to illuminate the intended area.
Whatever surface you want to illuminate, a dining room table, a kitchen island, you will want to adapt your lighting to the size of that surface .

3. The type of light.
Pendant lights come in a variety of shade options. Some have opaque shades made of metal , porcelain, or even wood veneer, which will cast a very different light than pendant lights with clear shades.
The type of lighting you're looking for will help determine what type of lampshade your pedant should have. You'll also want to consider whether you like the look of an exposed bulb or whether you'd prefer a lampshade with an open top , which will reflect light up and down.

Where to place your suspensions ?
Pendant lights are most commonly hung above the kitchen island, but since there are so many varieties of pendant lights, the places they can be placed are endless. Pendant lights can be hung in an unlimited number of combinations and locations.
They can be hung in multiples, triplicates, paired, or alone, whether as a single oversized fixture in the master suite, a row above the breakfast bar, or a trio of fixtures grouped above the dining room table, or even as an accent table lamp.

How to hang a pendant light?
As a general rule, pendant lights are usually hung at a height of between 70 and 90 cm above the target surface, approximately 150-170 cm from the bottom of the lampshade to the floor, and when hanging multiple pendant lights, the pendant lights should be spaced 60-80 cm apart.
Above a kitchen island , or even a desk, they should be hung at a level that will keep them up and out of the way. The last thing you want is to bang your head against the shade of a pendant light every time you work.
