There are many ways to brighten up a larger room. The extra space gives you plenty of room to get creative!
Whether you focus on several lighting fixtures of the same type or a combination of two or three types of lighting, it all depends on the style of your room and the practical functionality it needs to fulfill.
Things to keep in mind in a large living room:
- The greater the distance between the light source and the objects or people it illuminates, the dimmer the light may appear.
- Light spreads out (diffuses) as it travels and bounces off objects, causing less light to be focused at any one location.
- It will be more difficult to get a single light to fill the entire room, or reach all the walls and corners.
- You can always move the furniture away from the walls and closer to the center of the room so that it is closer to the light fixtures .
- You'll have a hard time fully lighting a large room with portable lights . A large room really needs at least one or two major light fixtures .
- A large room with a high ceiling will have a hard time getting light from the ceiling to the floor. Ideally, you'll want to use overhead lighting fixtures, such as chandeliers or pendants, rather than low-ceiling or recessed lighting fixtures.
- If you need more lighting fixtures to increase the overall level of ambient light, you will most likely need at least one or more lamps or low hanging fixtures for task lighting, for example next to a chair or above a table to provide a "hot spot" of light in the room, otherwise people may find that there is not enough light for practical activities.
- Smaller light fixtures in a larger room will not look right. Try to keep things in proportion to the size of the room. A larger room usually requires larger light fixtures and lamps .
- You can better distribute light throughout the room by using several small lighting fixtures, such as several lamps hanging from the ceiling, rather than one large centralized fixture.
- If you have the space, a ceiling- mounted chandelier is a great choice. They provide plenty of bulbs in close proximity and add a beautiful stylistic highlight to your home decor. Chandeliers are highly decorative centerpieces, also great in dining rooms, kitchens, foyers, and bedrooms.
- If your living room is part of a more open floor plan, consider how your lighting can also be shared with other parts of the overall space, since you are now sharing light between functional areas.
